James and John Kim began their piano studies at the age of five under Anders Martinson, a Gilmore Foundation Young Artist Awardee. They have been recognized with multiple scholarships from the Westside committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Both were also recipients of music scholarships from SOL-LA Music Academy. Since moving to Lexington, MA, in 2016, James and John have been studying with Steinway artist, Max Levinson. Mr. Levinson is Chair of the Piano Department at the Boston Conservatory and a faculty member at the New England Conservatory of Music. Recently, John and James were selected as finalists in the 2019 Waring International Piano Competition.

John Kim

John Kim, age 11, has studied piano for six years and is already an experienced performer. He placed 1st in the Los Angeles Young Pianist Competition, and in both the Sonata and Honors Competitions of CAPMT. John placed 2nd in the 2018 Chopin International Piano Competition, 2017 Steinway Society of Massachusetts Piano Competition, Open Solo category of the SYMF (Southwestern Youth Music Festival), and 3rd in his category of the 2015 Los Angeles Young Musician International Competition. John enjoys mathematics and art, as well as building LEGOS, watching movies, biking, and sledding.


James Kim

James Kim is a 10th grader at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and has performed widely in the Los Angeles and Boston areas. At the age of 9, he appeared on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show, together with Steinway concert artist Lang Lang, and made his concerto debut with the Palisades Symphony Orchestra. James has been a winner of many local, regional and international competitions, including 1st place finishes in the 2015 Los Angeles Young Musician International Competition, the Statewide Kathryn Gawartin Chopin Competition, the CAPMT Sonata Competition, the Alice Frazier Kitchen Competition, the SYMF, and the Glendale Piano Competition. He was also selected as finalist for the 2018 Fidelity Investments Young Artists Competition. James has participated in various music festivals and has had master classes with Norman Krieger, Alexander Korsantia, Peter Takacs, Ming Tsu, Jean-Louis Haguenauer, and Meng-Chieh Liu. He is also a dedicated chamber musician at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School under Marc Ryser and Angel Ramon Rivera. James enjoys mathematics and chemistry, and also likes to bike and travel.
