“Walden Woods” Piano Purchased by Local Family
The “Walden Woods” piano has found a new home, and its not far from the inspiration for the remarkable instrument. Philanthropist Brian David Stevens of Marlborough, Mass., recently purchased the Walden Woods piano as a 50th birthday gift for his wife Kathryn, who intends to use it to help raise money for charitable organizations benefiting those with disabilities, especially the Special People Special Needs Foundation.
The Walden Woods piano is a Steinway & Sons Model D Concert Grand Piano with a custom-built case designed by renowned marquetry artist Silas Kopf. The piano case features hand-carved relief portraits of flora and fauna found in Walden Woods. Primarily crafted in American black walnut, the piano also features six different species from the woods surrounding Walden Pond. However, no trees in Walden Woods were felled to manufacture the instrument.
The piano has been played and its plate has been signed by piano luminaries Elton John, Billy Joel, Bruce Hornsby, Barbara Nissman, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Evgeny Kissin and Emmanuel Ax.
