Yakir Arbib Biography

Yakir Arbib was born in Jerusalem on March 6th 1989, and started playing the piano when he was 4 years old. At 7 years old he enrolled at Tel Aviv’s “Stricker Conservatory Of Music” where he studied between the years 1996 and 2007, taking flute, trumpet and ensemble playing in addition to classical piano repertoire. During those early years Yakir performed in many concerts/recitals in the conservatory and has received a number of scholarships.

At the age of 14 his career took a completely different turn when he attracted the attention of the only jazz teacher at the conservatory at the time who started then giving Yakir jazz lessons, and in 2004 he was admitted to the prestigious “Thelma-Yellin Highschool of the Arts” in Tel Aviv where he continued his studies in jazz with some of Israel’s most influencial artists such as Amos Hoffman, Eli Degibri, and the Cohen brothers.

As a jazz player Yakir got the chance to perform as leader in some of the most important jazz clubs and festivals in Israel and Italy including “The Shablool”, “Ha Gada Ha Smalit”, “Charity Jazz Cafe”, “Diavolo Rosso”, “Villa Celimontana”, “Jazz At The Red Sea”, “100% Art”, “Roma Jazz” and has won the “America – Israel Cultural Foundation”(Keren Sharet) jazz performance award for young talents for 4 consecutive years (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009) as well as a scholarship from Berklee College of Music to attend both their Summer program and Full-Time Degree program.

In May 2008 he was selected as finalist to participate in the prodigious “Massimo Urbani International Jazz Award” in Italy, and after winning the first place, he got signed by the highly acclaimed Philology Jazz Records label (most noted for it’s works with Lee Konitz, Chet Baker and Phil Woods) under which he released his first album in trio.

The album “Portrait” (2009) is distributed in Europe, Israel, Japan and iTunes Music – it showcases Yakir’s own original jazz material alongside standards.

In recent years in his constant search for new sounds and new ways of expressing himself, Yakir has made a radical return to classical music, Studying under ‘Berklee College of Music’ Piano Chair Stephany Tiernan and composition Chair Arnold Friedman, composing and performing Avant-Garde classical music; appearing in various prestigious halls such as “Steinert Hall” in Boston, “Felicja Blumental Center” in Tel Aviv, and the “Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” in Washington. His compositions have been performed by the ‘Kalistos Chamber Orchestra’ and the ‘Triple Helix Piano Trio’.

American pianist Victor Rosenbaum has concertized widely as soloist and chamber music performer in the United States, Europe, Asia, Israel, and Russia in such prestigious halls as Tully Hall in New York and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. Described by the Boston Globe as “one of those artists who make up for all the drudgery the habitual concertgoer endures in the hopes of finding the real, right thing,” he has collaborated with such artists as Leonard Rose, Paul Katz, Arnold Steinhardt, Robert Mann, Joseph Silverstein, Malcolm Lowe, and the Brentano, Borromeo, and Cleveland String Quartets, among others. Festival appearances have included Tanglewood, the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Kfar Blum and Tel Hai (in Israel), Yellow Barn, Kneisel Hall (Blue Hill), Musicorda, Masters de Pontlevoy (France), the Heifetz Institute, the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York, and the International Music Seminar in Vienna. Concert appearances in recent years have brought him to Chicago, Minneapolis, Tokyo, Beijing, St. Petersburg (Russia), Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, New York and Boston, and other cities.

A student of Elizabeth Brock and Martin Marks in his hometown of Indianapolis, Rosenbaum later studied with Rosina Lhevinne and Leonard Shure while earning degrees at Brandeis and Princeton Universities. Now a renowned teacher himself, Rosenbaum presently serves on the faculty of the Mannes College of Music in New York and the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he formerly chaired the piano and chamber music departments. He has been Visiting Professor of Piano at the Eastman School of Music, a guest teacher at Juilliard, and presents lectures, workshops, and master classes for teachers’ groups and schools both in the U. S. and abroad, including London’s Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, and Guildhall School, the conservatories of St. Petersburg and Moscow, Beijing Central Conservatory, the Toho School in Tokyo and other institutions such as the Menuhin School, and the Jerusalem Music Center. Rosenbaum was Director and President of the Longy School of Music from 1985-2001.

His highly praised recording of Schubert, which Classical disCDigest described as “a powerful and poignant record of human experience,” is on Bridge Records. The release of the last three Beethoven sonatas on the same label was named by American Record Guide critic Alan Becker as one of the top ten classical recordings of 2005 and Susan Kagan of Fanfare wrote of that disc: “Victor Rosenbaum’s rewarding interpretation can sit proudly among the best.” Two recent recordings on the Fleur de Son label feature music of Schubert and Mozart.

On Saturday, March 16 the Concord Area Music School Association held their Concerto Concert at Steinert Hall, and dazzled with a program consisting of various movements from seven difference piano concerti. Seven talented young pianists, ranging in age from 9 to 18 years old, performed works by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Ravel and more, and displayed a stunning level of musicality and technique. Two Steinway Model D Concert grand pianos were played, one for orchestral accompaniment, and the other for the soloist. The concert proved that the future of classical music is in good hands. Congratulations to all on a spectacular performance!
